Further information

Stanbrook Abbey was once home to a closed order convent of Benedictine nuns who purchased the site in 1835. The nuns had been ejected from their original house during the French revolution and following 18 months of imprisonment in France, they returned to England, eventually settling at Stanbrook Abbey. During their time at the Stanbrook, the nuns commissioned Edward Welby Pugin to undertake a new scheme of work which led to the creation of the iconic cloisters, the church, the tower and the other buildings you see at today.
